About HEEDO

A women-led organization for an environment and economy that hold together

The Horn Environment and Economic Development Organization is a local NGO working across Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa to advance environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, climate resilience, women's and youth leadership, and inclusive community development.

Our story

Local roots, regional reach

Since 2018 we have grown from a Mogadishu-based initiative into an organization delivering programs across six regions, always guided by the communities living closest to climate risk.

We believe lasting change is built locally — by women, youth and rural producers leading the work themselves.

Who we are

A women-led, local non-governmental organization founded in 2018 and headquartered in Hodan, Mogadishu — rooted in the communities we serve.

What drives us

We tackle the intersection of climate change, environmental degradation and economic poverty — the forces that hit the Horn of Africa hardest.

Who we serve

Internally displaced persons, vulnerable women, youth, and rural communities living on the front line of drought and flood.

Our approach

Four commitments behind every project

Our programs are designed to be locally owned, measurable, and led by the women and youth they exist to serve.

01

Locally led

Solutions designed with communities, not delivered to them — so impact outlasts the project cycle.

02

Women at the center

Women and young people lead governance, advocacy and enterprise, not just participate.

03

Evidence-driven

Monitoring, evaluation and accountability are built into how we plan and learn.

04

Climate-first

Every livelihood we build is designed to withstand the shocks of a changing climate.
